Choreographic Platform Austria
The biennial event presenting outstanding dance and performance productions from Austria to national and international audiences.
MoreGuiding principles
TQW is dedicated to promoting contemporary dance and performance and related theoretical discourses and viewpoints. It receives, initiates, nurtures and protects artistic processes and shares in their risk. An integral component of programme design and development is the theoretical knowledge of dance and performance, which the TQW has played a decisive role in extending since its foundation.
The location of the TQW at the centre of the Vienna Museumsquartier supports the interdisciplinary nature of the programme, the tracing of contemporary developments and pioneering trends in dance creation and the dialogic proximity with other arts disciplines.
History
Since its inception in 2001, Tanzquartier Wien has counted among the most influential dance centres in Europe. Initiated by local artists, it was one of several cultural institutions that were given premises at MuseumsQuartier. The first artistic director, Sigrid Gareis, was succeeded by Walter Heun in 2009. As of the beginning of 2018, Bettina Kogler is in charge of the establishment.
Building and facilities
TQW has 3 rehearsal and training studios, 2 of which are equipped for performances (100 seats). There are 2 performance venues: Halle E – approx. 870 seats and Halle G – approx. 310 seats.
The library offers specialist literature on: dance science, dance training, performance theory, dance and performance history, theatre, philosophy, body and aesthetics. It is complemented by a media library and since 2015 an online Mediathek the core of which is the archive of Tanzquartier Wien with video recordings of the artistic and discursive works that have taken place at the dancehouse (performances, lectures, research-workshops, etc.) since its foundation in 2001.
